Ice Packs – A form of physical therapy that uses a flexible gel pack to decrease inflammation and swelling. This therapy is very important in the initial phase of treatment and should be applied as soon as possible after an acute injury. Trauma causes tearing of the tiny vessels which causes leaking of blood into the interstitial tissue, this is part of the normal healing process. This leaking is the beginning of scar tissue and should be kept to a minimum to decrease the amount of scar tissue that is eventually formed. Scar tissue is non-elastic and shrinks with time causing decreased flexibility.
